Some great ancient sage once said: "Know thyself." Why? Because we are all the same and knows what I can do well and I need very helpful with providing clarity on how to proceed. This is particularly the case for managing a business. Not only do I know myself (human) but I also know of my (now) so that my company is not just me.

The conventional method to complete this process by conducting an analysis SWOT. (Some people refer to this as training, only to be different). SWOT means strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The "SW" part the process refers to the questions, issues, resources, etc, which are internal to the organization. The "OT" part refers to factors that affect an outside company.

For example, resistance to technology that could be your company is the exclusive licensee in a particular geographical area. Given that the weakness may be the struggling rival just mentioned.

So that's the idea. Now here's the big problem with the hiring of a SWOT analysis – so it is objective comprehensive and important details. Let me talk about objectivity.

Objectivity refers to conclusions about your situation the same way that the consultant external objective, impartial and competent to do. But the problem is that most owner-operators worry too expensive to have as a consultant to carry out this process. This means that you (and staff) must perform the analysis. So what should be the aim should be done in a subjective manner.

The problem with the analysis of cases using domestic resources is that our weaknesses of character may get in the way of being objective and impartial. In fact conducting an analysis SWOT of key people in an organization can be a recipe for an open display of very passionate debate on what in the event that may or may not be important. Produce effective analysis can be harmed by this type of discussion, if not focus on important issues and can educate owners and managers keep such a process.

We can say things that people do not want to hear. Statistics can be shown that people will not see. Events can argue that people prefer to forget. Information can be further minimized or rationalized in the discussion to continue the status quo or to protect the position of someone.

So, if you perform an analysis SWOT (I recommend), should be in an environment that is safe to say anything. Participants must be informed before the process to the fact that the analysis only designed to improve the business. This is not to score points. This is the truth and honesty. You get to the facts and its position. The person "godfather" of the process (usually the business owner) should demonstrate leadership safe and welcome honest and vigorous debate, as with the health and betterment of society rooted in minds of all participants.
